Antique 18thC Chantilly Soft Paste Porcelain Kakiemon Chinoiserie Scene Pot. This product data sheet is originally written in English. A superb toilette pot (with the much nicer French name - pot à pommade or pot a fard) made by Chantilly in the 1730s.
Used for makeup or ointment or even tobacco or anything of that sort it is made of soft paste porcelain with a tin glaze (to make it appear whiter) and their famous and amazing enamel colors. The piece is hand painted in the Japanese Kakiemon palette colors with chased silver mounts. The main body has an all around scene of boys playing on it as well as a pair of birds roosters? Another small bird flying an a little bush. Sparingly painted but in my view this is the best porcelain ever got. Absolutely amazing to look at. As good as it gets for me. The lid is also hand painted with some design including at least one child but most is covered up with an ingenious early repair. The main body has a crack in it as shown and the lid was broken into 5 pieces by the look of it and the finial is gone. This was repaired as shown with a fancy top piece including a new finial in Sterling silver and a plate to the underside to hold it all together. The silver mounts are likely original to the piece and I suspect the repair might also be from the 18th century.
I decided to leave it as is instead of having it brought back to perfection because the repair is so neat that it almost adds to the piece instead of taking away in my opinion. A small firing flaw to the side as shown. All in all something very special that one rarely if ever gets to see outside of museums. The pot and lid are 4.75 inches tall with a diameter of 3.125 inches. The piece is unmarked underneath which is common on their early wares.
There is an impossibly to make out silver hallmark to the mounts. French France softpaste 18th century Porzellan Topf lidded Deckeltopf.
